MAPODE is a legally registered
multi-dimensional Youth-at-Risk focused, Community-based Non
Governmental Organization (NGO). It was registered in Zambia
in Nov. 1997 and in Uganda in June, 1998 to counter the spread
and impact of HIV/AIDS in both Zambia and Uganda.
MAPODE is derived from its
initiator’s 6 years of experience working and interacting
with over 4,000 adults , children, and prostitutes which convinced
her beyond doubt that:
1. The majority of children, young girls and
women who were parading their bodies on the ‘night street
market’ were there, not because they entered street
prostitution as the the chosen ‘career’ of their
lives, but because they had found no alternative for life’s
sustenance and livelihood;
2. Whereas rehabilitation efforts were necessary
to assist those children, young girls, and women willing to
join alternative ventures to prostitution. As a result, the
level of human, physical, psychological, spiritual, moral
suffering and degradation gone through by victims of prostitution,
in many ways go beyond rehabilitation and restoration efforts;
and
3. What was urgently needed were vigorous
Prevention and Protection measures to deter this human destruction.
